Dental Crowns

Grand Rapids Dental Bridges Dentist

Dental Crowns Dentist Grand RapidsOur Grand Rapids dentists at GR Family Dental recommend dental crowns for teeth with significant cracking, decay, or discoloration.

A dental crown covers the entire visible portion of your tooth above the gum line, which is perfect for patients with teeth compromised by large cavities or other oral health issues. A crown may also be placed on top of a dental implant or used to anchor the false tooth in a bridge.

Dental Crown Procedure

During your first appointment with us, we will file down the receiving tooth to make room for the dental crown. Next, your dentist will take impressions of your teeth and send them to the dental lab where your porcelain crown will be made.

Restore teeth to their original strength and appearance!

While you wait for your dental crown to be fabricated, your dentist will place a temporary crown to protect the tooth. When you come back for your second appointment, your temporary crown will be replaced by the permanent dental restoration.

It is also possible for our dentists to use CEREC technology so you can receive a same-day crown. Same-day dental crowns are designed and fabricated in our office so you don’t have to deal with the hassle of waiting for your crown to be made in an off-site lab. CEREC dental crowns are made out of ceramic.

Inlays & Onlays

If you have a cavity, our dentist will need to drill out the decayed tooth matter and restore the tooth by filling the hole left behind. If you have tooth decay, your dentist may recommend dental inlays or onlays as an alternative to fillings and crowns.

If you want to save as much of your natural tooth enamel as possible, you’ll want to consider inlays or onlays. Many of our patients prefer inlays and onlays to dental crowns because they are less invasive. To prepare your tooth for an inlay or onlay, we only remove the decayed tooth matter. Dental crowns, on the other hand, are designed to cover the entire visible portion of your tooth above the gum line, which means our dentists have to remove more natural tooth enamel to make room.

Health Benefits of Dental Crowns

Many of our patients prefer dental crowns to other restorations because they restore teeth to their original strength and appearance. Dental crowns are able to restore teeth with significant tooth decay, cracking, and even discoloration. A dental crown may also be recommended if you need to restore a tooth after root canal therapy.

The Grand Rapids dentists at GR Family Dental are dedicated to helping patients achieve their best smiles. If you are interested in learning if you are a candidate for dental crowns, give our restoration dentists a call at (616) 455-3020.
